Hands and Feet Project

At Hands & Feet Project, our mission is to be the hands and feet of Christ fighting for the cause of vulnerable children, their families, and their communities. Without secure housing, consistent food, and medical care, school can’t be a priority for children in Haiti. Without an education, they are easily exploitable and dependent on the mercy of others. We provide a circle of care to the people we serve, meeting their practical needs alongside providing spiritual, emotional, and social care so that they can pursue healing and growth. We believe no one should have to live in perpetual chaos, trapped in a generational cycle of trauma and brokenness, and that’s why we’re committed to serving vulnerable children.

For the past 19 years, The Village Chapel has provided steadfast support to Haiti’s children and families through Hands & Feet Project, contributing nearly $150,000. Beyond responding to crises and providing humanitarian aid during natural disasters, TVC has prayed for and over our mission, encouraged our team, and stood in the gap caring for the one vulnerable child in need of a family.

We dream of a future where families no longer have to choose between buying food or sending their children to school. Education is a powerful catalyst for change, capable of breaking the cycle of poverty, improving healthcare outcomes, and driving economic growth.

Cottage Cove Urban Ministries

Cottage Cove Urban Ministries provides educational opportunities, life skills classes, and training in the arts to at-risk children and youth through the power and in the name of Jesus. This includes free daily programs at three locations around Nashville.

TVC has been a valued partner in helping Cottage Cove financially with specific projects and needs and aiding staffing, which is integral to maintaining vital out-of-school programs. Further, TVC’s work groups and individuals volunteering in our youth programs have been outstanding!

Our largest outreach for the year is Christmas with Dignity on December 14. Along with needing to source toys and gift items for hundreds of children, we utilize hundreds of volunteers that day and throughout the preceding week.

During the summer, we value volunteers any weekday between 7:30 am – 5:30 pm, and during the school year, we welcome weekday help between 2:30 pm – 6:00 pm. An hour of your time helping with an activity or homework, helping a student memorize a Bible verse, or letting a child read to you makes a difference. For more information, visit https://cottagecove.org/. To volunteer, contact Brent MacDonald, [email protected], 615-292-2303 x 1010.

Please RSVP here!

Begin Anew

TVC’s generous support is empowering individuals to overcome obstacles caused by poverty by providing education, mentoring, and resources. Begin Anew serves the Middle Tennessee area through three physical locations in Davidson County (Nashville, Madison, and Woodbine), one in Williamson County (Franklin), and a new Online Campus that serves Davidson, Williamson, and surrounding counties. The program provides three curriculum tracks for adult students: High School Equivalency (HSE) test preparation, English Language Learning (ELL), and Computer and Job Skills. In addition, they offer weekly Community Groups so students feel the community’s support and can grow spiritually. The adult students they serve are ages 18 years or older, except minors with parental and school board consent, at their five campuses. All services are free to enrolled students, and they serve people of all faiths and cultures. While services are free to the students, their cost per student averages $2,500 annually.

With support from TVC, in 2023, they served over 38 countries of origin, 333 adult students, celebrated 53 graduates, and served over 75 children whose parents were enrolled in their programs.

At a recent Second Saturday of City Service project, TVC Volunteers assembled over 200 Pick Me Up bags for students at all four campus locations. The bags were filled with lotion, toothbrushes and toothpaste, prayer cards, gum, mints, water bottles and more. This project lifted the adult students’ spirits and powerfully expressed God’s love.

Begin Anew always needs volunteers to serve as prayer warriors, teachers, tutors, encouragers, and childcare providers. Their goal is also to serve meals to all our campuses, as students often come to class after working many hours. They need meal providers for their Madison Campus—an excellent project for a home or small group to consider doing together. To volunteer, contact Teresa Watts at [email protected].

Call To Worship: Who is Like You, O Lord

Leader:
The word of the Lord is upright,
And all his work is done in faithfulness.

People:
He loves righteousness and justice;
The earth is full of the steadfast love of the Lord.

Leader:
Who is like you, O Lord,
Majestic in holiness,
Awesome in glorious deeds, doing wonders?

People:
You will return in power and glory,
To set all things right,
And to make all things new!

Leader:
Who is like you, O Lord,
Majestic in holiness,
Awesome in glorious deeds?

All:
Hallelujah!
For the Lord our God
The Almighty reigns!

Confession: The Glory of God and Everlasting Life

LEADER:
How can we glorify God?

PEOPLE:
We glorify God by enjoying him, loving him, trusting him, and by obeying his will, commands, and law.

LEADER:
What is idolatry?

PEOPLE:
Idolatry is trusting in created things rather than the Creator for our hope and happiness, significance and security.

LEADER:
What hope does everlasting life hold for us?

PEOPLE:
It reminds us that this present fallen world is not all there is; soon we will live with and enjoy God forever in the new city, in the new heaven and the new earth, where we will be fully and forever freed from all sin and will inhabit renewed, resurrection bodies in a renewed, restored creation.

Classic Prayer: Philip Melancthon, 1497-1560

I give thanks to you, Almighty God, for revealing yourself to me, for sending your Son Jesus Christ, that he might become a sacrifice, that through him I might be forgiven and receive eternal life. I give thanks to you, O God, for making me a recipient of your great favor through the Gospel and for preserving your Word and the Church. O that I might truly declare your goodness and blessings! Inspire me, I earnestly pursue you, and ask that the Holy Spirit would urge thanksgiving to shine forth in my life… Enlighten my heart, that I may be more fully aware of your favor toward me and forever worship you with true thanksgiving.

The Day of the LORD, Part 1

The Minor Prophets: The God of Our Salvation

Pastor Jim Thomas

Joel 2:1-27

“Pain insists upon being attended to. God whispers to us in our pleasures, speaks in our consciences, but shouts in our pains. It is his megaphone to rouse a deaf world.”

C. S. Lewis, The Problem of Pain

Alas for the day! for the day of the LORD is at hand, and as a destruction from the Almighty shall it come.
Joel 1:15

What is “the day of the LORD” and why does it matter?

Bible books that refer to the day of the LORD:

  • Isaiah
  • Jeremiah
  • Ezekiel
  • Joel
  • Amos
  • Obadiah
  • Zephaniah
  • Zechariah
  • Malachi
  • Acts
  • 1 Corinthians
  • 2 Corinthians
  • 1 Thessalonians
  • 2 Thessalonians
  • 2 Peter

These Bible passages often describe the nature, scope and timing of the Day of the LORD and may broadly refer to any of God’s actions in three contexts: historic, imminent or ultimate.

“The Day of the LORD” is a biblical phrase that signifies God’s special interventions in human history wherein God acts with righteous judgment against sin and evil or, wherein by His sovereign grace, God acts to offer deliverance and salvation to His people.

What does the Day of the LORD mean for us?

  • The God of the Bible is not an indifferent or disinterested deity when it comes to humanity.
  • The God of the Bible is personal and powerful, and has plans and purposes He intends to fulfill.
  • The God of the Bible is sovereign over His creation, over all human history, over every nation, and over all people.
  • In God’s righteous judgment He intends to eradicate all evil and its effects: idolatry, injustice, abuse, greed, poverty, racism, despair, disease, death, etc.
  • God’s gracious offer of salvation by grace through faith in Christ means that all sinners who repent and believe will be forgiven and saved.

Here’s what’s waiting for us in the Day of the LORD:

  • Forgiveness for the past.
  • Joy for the present.
  • Hope for the future.
  • So, what are we waiting for?
  • It’s time for us to repent, rend our hearts and return to the LORD (v12-17)

“Crying to God is not the same as returning to God…The Lord is looking for a people who will not only cry out to him, but who will return to him with all their heart.”
David Prior, The Message of Joel, Micah and Habakkuk

“God’s people can take comfort in the fact that they will be vindicated on the day of the Lord. God will never abandon his promise that repentance brings forgiveness. Joel’s message to us is that there is still time to call on the Lord’s name and be forgiven and saved. Those who turn to God will receive his pardon and enjoy the blessings described in Joel’s prophecy, including the enjoyment of God’s presence forever, but those who refuse face punishment and destruction.”
Yoilah Yilpet, Africa Bible Commentary

“Returning to God in fresh contrition, however ashamed and disgusted with ourselves, he will not tepidly pardon. He will abundantly pardon. He does not merely accept us. He sweeps us up in his arms again.”
Dane Ortlund, Gentle and Lowly

“Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful; and let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds, not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another; and all the more as you see the day drawing near.”
Hebrews 10:23-25

Discussion Questions

  • How does the ultimate “Day of the Lord” affect your thinking? How can we be reminded that this world is not ultimate?
  • We must be intentional in our worship of God—constantly returning to the Lord. Do you anticipate Sunday worship with prayer and thoughtfulness in your own preparation? Consider reading the sermon passage before arriving to Worship, pray for your heart to be open before arriving to Worship, and be on your guard for distractions before and during Worship.
  • Have you lost sight that you are one of God’s people if you are trusting in Jesus Christ? Go to your Bible and ask God to reveal Himself to you afresh.
  • Spurgeon said, “The sovereignty of God is the pillow where we lay our head”. What in your life today needs a clear reminder that God is for you, that He will never leave you, and that He is in control of every aspect of your life?

Daystar Counseling Ministries

Daystar Counseling Ministries, Inc. seeks to offer the hope of Christ to children, adolescents and families in need. Counseling services are offered on a sliding scale system, based on a family’s or individual’s ability to pay. Through individual and group counseling, summer camp programs, leadership training and parenting seminars, Daystar is dedicated to serving the greater Nashville area, as well as the community at large, with encouragement and support.

TVC’s donations have provided additional funding to our sliding scale for families who could not afford counseling otherwise. Whether we are in need of volunteers, prayer, or financial support, TVC has consistently been there for us!

We have summer experiences and summer retreats coming up throughout the months of June and July and would love your prayers for both of those events as we meet kids where they are and share the love of Christ with them. In October, we will have a peer-to-peer fundraiser and would love for anyone and everyone to join in fundraising for Daystar! Young Life Capernaum

Young Life Capernaum is an outreach ministry that reaches out to teens and young adults (ages 14-22) with developmental and intellectual disabilities. Our volunteer leaders meet students and Capernaum friends by going to the schools and spending time with them during lunches, getting meals outside of school, and doing whatever our friends with disabilities like to do together. We have Capernaum Club on Monday Nights at Sevier Park Community Center, where we have a leader share the Gospel, play silly games, and sing songs together after sharing a meal. It is a party with a purpose and we fully believe that our friends with disabilities deserve a place to be themselves and belong with dignity and know that they are made fearfully and wonderfully by a creative and loving God.

We always love having folks come and join us for Capernaum clubs as adult helpers to be extra hands and help with food, meet our Capernaum friends, and add to the excitement. Our most significant need is more male volunteer leaders, primarily for summer camps and meeting new students with disabilities. Small groups can provide a meal by paying for pizza and bring it to clubs to spend time with our friends. This has been incredibly helpful for the leaders and staff, and it gives members of the Nashville community a glimpse into the world of those with disabilities and lets them see how capable they truly are. Young Life Capernaum wants to provide a more dignified environment for all our friends. For more information or to volunteer, please reach out to [email protected].

Touchstone Youth Resource Services

Touchstone Youth Resource Services is a faith-based initiative dedicated to nurturing the social-emotional development of teens through a multifaceted approach. By offering weekly small groups, monthly service-learning projects, and quarterly enrichment activities focusing on fine arts, outdoor adventure, college visits, and more, we provide a comprehensive platform for a young person’s growth. As a body of Believers, Touchstone’s mission is to help teens envision a hopeful future, embrace positive options, and engage in a better life!

The generous contributions from The Village Chapel have been instrumental in sustaining and expanding our youth development programs at Touchstone Youth Resource Services. With TVC’s support, we have provided CiViL character development groups to more than 100 students at five local public schools. These students participated in their annual SHOW OUR LOVE service project, which stocked their schools and other community agencies with care packs of toiletries and feminine hygiene products. This was possible mainly due to TVC’s collection drive for those items for CiViL’s SHOW OUR LOVE. Highlights from this school year are a college visit to UT Chattanooga, a career day in federal court, which included a citizenship naturalization ceremony, and free senior portraits for deserving students who couldn’t otherwise afford them. TVC’s donations directly impact the lives of the teens we serve, enabling them to build social-emotional and character assets that equip them for success.

2024 marks the 20th anniversary of Touchstone’s CiViL initiative. We are putting together a committee of Touchstone supporters, community leaders, and CiViL alumni to organize a celebration for CiViL, our annual Touchstone Tribute fundraiser. Since 2004, thousands of teens have acknowledged CiViL as a significant part of their social, emotional, and spiritual formation. This event will honor the past two decades of ministry and raise funding for the future.

Touchstone needs volunteers for the Touchstone Tribute Committee, for the BiG Blessing Benefit sale in July, and to assist with the CiViL Summer program (which requires background checks and training). To volunteer, contact – Melony Pugh-Weber at [email protected]. For more information, visit https://tyrs.org/.

Call To Worship: Psalm 24

LEADER:  I was glad when they said to me, let us go to the house of the Lord!
PEOPLE:  Praise the Lord! For it is good to sing praises to our God!

LEADER:  Great is our Lord, and abundant in power; His understanding is beyond measure.
PEOPLE:  Blessed is he whose hope is in the Lord, who made heaven and earth, the sea and all that is in them.

LEADER:  The Lord will reign forever – your God, O Zion, to all generations.
ALL:  Let everything that has breath praise the Lord! Praise the Lord!

From the Book of Common Prayer for Stir Up Sunday/Christ the King Sunday

Stir up, we beseech thee, O Lord, the wills of thy faithful people; that they, plenteously bringing forth the fruit of good works, may of thee be plenteously rewarded; Almighty and eternal God, you chose to restore all things in Christ your Son, who is king of heaven and earth. Grant that all creation, set free from the bondage of sin and death, may offer homage to your majesty and join in singing your eternal praise. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever.

Stir Us Up and Call Us Back

Pastor Matt Pierson

Stir Up / Christ the King Sunday

1 Chronicles 16:8-36

“You never go away from us, yet we have difficulty in returning to you. Come Lord, stir us up and call us back. Kindle and seize us. Be our fire and our sweetness.” – Augustine

1 Chronicles 16:8-36

  • David’s Song of Thanks
  • On the occasion of the ark being placed in the tent in Jerusalem
  • The ark had been on an approx. 100 year journey
  • David appointed that “thanksgiving be sung to the Lord.”

David’s Song of Thanks found also in the Psalms:

  • 1 Chronicles 16:8-22 = Psalm 105:1-15
  • 1 Chronicles 16:23-33 = Psalm 96:1-10, 11-13

Indicatives of 1 Chronicles 16:

  • He is a covenant-making and a covenant-keeping God.  (v. 15, 16)
  • He is a saving God.  (v. 23, 35)
  • He is a God who remembers.  (v. 15, 19-22)
  • He is an everlasting God.  (v. 36)

Imperatives of 1 Chronicles 16:

  • Give thanks to the Lord
  • Seek the Lord
  • Remember His wondrous works and His covenant
  • Tell of His salvation
  • Declare His glory
  • Worship the Lord

Christ the King offers:

  1. Grace for our past
  2. Courage for our present
  3. Hope for our future

Discussion Questions

  1. Which of the imperatives listed from 1 Chronicles 16 jumps out as something that you should focus on over the coming week?
  2. Are there aspects of your own kingdom you need to let go before being able to honestly say “Lord, Thy kingdom come”?
  3. As we head into the Advent season, what can you do to help “stir up” the wills of those around you, encouraging them to return to God as the source of their refreshment?

“Because in no other person but the historic Jesus of Nazareth has God become man and lived a human life on earth, died to bear the penalty of our sins and been raised from death and exalted to glory, there is no other Savior, for there is no other person who is qualified to save.”
– John Stott, The Authentic Jesus

“Christ’s way of life is a holy attack on everything that leaks the brightness out of our lives or detracts from the promised joy of our faith. It demolishes anything that promises liberation but, in fact, imprisons us in boredom. Following Him evokes a life pursued heartily and meaningfully.”
– Eugene Peterson, On Living Well

“Before we pray, ‘Lord, Thy kingdom come,’ we must be willing to pray, ‘My kingdom go.’”
– Alan Redpath

The reality of Christ the King coming to us doesn’t mean the darkness doesn’t exist, but it does mean there is one greater than the darkness who has come, who has defeated death, our greatest enemy, and has promised to return to make ALL things right.

Call & Response
1 Chronicles 16:8-13, 34

A:  Oh give thanks to the Lord; call upon His name; Make known his deeds among the peoples!

B:  Sing to Him, sing praises to Him; Tell of all His wondrous works!

A:   Glory in His holy name; Let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice!

B:  Seek the Lord and His strength; Seek His presence continually!

A: Remember the wondrous works that He has done, His miracles and the judgements He has uttered.

B:  O offspring of Israel His servant, Children of Jacob, His chosen ones!

ALL:  Oh give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; For His steadfast love endures forever!

“Therefore repent and return, so that your sins may be wiped away, in order that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord.”
– Acts 3:19 (NASB)

Classic Prayer: CLEMENT OF ROME

After Paul and Peter were martyred in Rome, Clement became a leader of the church there. Just as Paul had to write letters to the church in Corinth to confront the problems within the young church in a difficult city, Clement also did. His letter of skillful tone and challenge to reconciliation and renewed faith is said to be one of the earliest documents we have outside of the New Testament. His deeply pastoral heart urged humility and laying aside angry disputes and pride. A message perfect for our ears today. His humble prayer will be ours today.

We beg you, Lord and Master, to be our help and aid. Save those among us who are in tribulation; have mercy on the lowly; lift up the fallen; show yourself unto the needy; heal the ungodly; convert the wanderers of your people; feed the hungry; release our prisoners; raise up the weak; comfort the fainthearted. Let all … know that you are God alone, and Jesus Christ is your Son, and we are your people and the sheep of your pasture.

When All is Said and Done…

Pastor Jim Thomas

1 & 2 Kings: The King of Redemption History

1 Kings 11:14-43

When All is Said and Done…

  1. We need a better king.
  2. The God of the Bible is sovereign over all human history and faithful to all His promises.
  3. God’s judgment and discipline do not negate God’s promises.
  4. Jesus Christ is the King of redemption history

“Those who decline to respond to God’s goodness by repentance, and faith, and trust, and submission to His will, cannot wonder or complain if sooner or later the tokens of His goodness are withdrawn, the opportunity of benefiting from them ends and retribution supervenes.”
– J.I. Packer, Knowing God

“And behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call His name Jesus. He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Most High: and the Lord God shall give unto Him the throne of his father David: and He shall reign over the house of Jacob forever; and of His kingdom there shall be no end.”
– Luke 1:31-33

“And it is He who changes the times and the epochs;
He removes kings and establishes kings;
He gives wisdom to wise men,
And knowledge to men of understanding.
It is He who reveals the profound and hidden things; He knows what is in the darkness,
And the light dwells with Him.”
– Daniel 2:21-22

“A time of social upheaval and chaos such as ours is likely to send even the most devout Christians into despair unless they can place the terrifying flux of life in the earthly city against the unchanging reality of the sovereign God Himself.”
– Carl R. Trueman, Protestants Need to Go Back to Basics

“When you go through a trial, the sovereignty of God is the pillow upon which you lay your head.”
– C.H. Spurgeon

“Corporate worship is designed to humble you by pointing out the depth of your need and enthrall you by pointing to the glory of God’s promises.”
– Paul Tripp

“God’s forgiving love to me in Christ is a sheer marvel that passes all comprehension. Only where we understand His wrath, do we understand the might of His love. It is as we understand His love that we know that His wrath is just.”
– Lesslie Newbigin, Signs Amid the Rubble: The Purposes of God in Human History

“Christ is everywhere throughout the Old Testament. It speaks of Him explicitly and implicitly, in promises, patterns, types, hints and images. Through these various ways, the Old Testament reveals and anticipates the richness of His character:  His work, His life, His glory, His hope, His might, His love, His suffering, His wisdom and so much more, and it does this all before the historical event of His incarnation.”
– Scott Redd

Discussion Questions

  1. Do you find it difficult reconcile your acceptance of God’s grace with your understanding of His judgement?
  2. What “lesser kings” in your life can be a distraction from your honoring & following God as the true King?
  3. What can we practically do to help find our soul’s nourishment in God & in a right relationship with Him?

The Bridge + Revive Camps

The Bridge was formed in 1998 by Tom and Patty Lane with Mike and Nancy Demus and has two components: Revive Youth Camps and international missions. The biannual Revive Youth Camps on the Gulf Coast and Middle Tennessee have changed thousands of lives, drawing junior and senior high school youth closer to Jesus. However, Revive is more than camps; they encourage and train young leaders to go and do—to serve! Whether in our hometowns or abroad, there are always needs we can help meet, and Revive creates opportunities for young people to use their talents and gifts to make a difference. In particular, Revive teams have gone to South Africa and support continuing work in Ecuador.

TVC contributions help provide Revive scholarships for youth who can’t afford camp, mainly those living in inner-city and refugee communities in Nashville. TVC’ers continue to be vital members of the Revive leadership team. The next summer camp will be at Blue Lake Camp from June 17 to 22, 2024.

Discussion Questions

  • As you think about someone in your life that exhibits biblical humility, what are the qualities that makes you think of them?  Have you ever asked God to give you more of the humble qualities you admire in them?
  • How are biblical wisdom and humility connected?
  • How can you practically “think of yourself less”, rather than “thinking less of yourself”?
  • Humility begins with an accurate recognition of who God is and who we  are before Him.  Is your God too small?  Have you made yourself too big?

Proverbs 11:2

When pride comes, then comes dishonor, But with the humble is wisdom.

Proverbs 15:33

The fear of the LORD is the instruction for wisdom, And before honor comes humility.

Proverbs 15:33

The fear of the LORD is the instruction for wisdom, And before honor comes humility.

Proverbs 16:18

Pride goes before destruction, And a haughty spirit before stumbling.

Proverbs 16:19

It is better to be humble in spirit with the lowly Than to divide the spoil with the proud.

Proverbs 18:12

Before destruction the heart of man is haughty, But humility goes before honor.

Proverbs 22:4

The reward of humility and the fear of the LORD are riches, honor and life.

Proverbs 26:12

Do you see a man wise in his own eyes? There is more hope for a fool than for him.

Proverbs 29:23

A man’s pride will bring him low, But a humble spirit will obtain honor.

“If anyone would like to acquire humility, I can, I think, tell him the first step. The first step is to realize that one is proud… If you think you are not conceited, it means you are very conceited indeed.”
– C. S. Lewis, Mere Christianity

“And whoever exalts himself shall be humbled; and whoever humbles himself shall be exalted.”
Matthew 23:12

1. Humility before God

“Thus says the Lord to Josiah, ‘Because your heart was tender and you humbled yourself before God, when you heard his words . . . and because you humbled yourself before Me, tore your clothes and wept before Me, I truly have heard you,’ declares the Lord.”
2 Chronicles 34:27

“Whoever then humbles himself as this child, he is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.”
Matthew 18:4

But He gives a greater grace. Therefore it says, “GOD IS OPPOSED TO THE PROUD, BUT GIVES GRACE TO THE HUMBLE.”
James 4:6

“Humble yourselves in the presence of the Lord, and He will exalt you. “
James 4:10

“I wish I had got a bit further with humility myself: if I had, I could probably tell you more about the relief, the comfort, of taking the fancy-dress off – getting rid of the false self, with all its ‘Look at me’ and ‘Aren’t I a good boy?’ and all its posing and posturing. To get even near it, even for a moment, is like a drink of water to a man in a desert.”
– C. S. Lewis, Mere Christianity

2. Humility about ourself

“Humility… means you don’t interpret everything in relation to yourself, and you don’t need to. It is the death of the narrow, suffocating filter of self referentiality.”
– Gavin Ortlund, Humility: The Joy of Self-Forgetfulness

“How much larger your life would be if your self could become smaller in it.”
– G. K. Chesterton, Orthodoxy

3. Humility toward others

“The thing we would remember from meeting a truly gospel-humble person is how much they seemed to be totally interested in us. Because the essence of gospel-humility is not thinking more of myself or thinking less of myself, it is thinking of myself less. Gospel-humility is not needing to think about myself. Not needing to connect things with myself. It is an end to thoughts such as ‘I’m in this room with these people, does that make me look good? Do I want to be here?’ True gospel-humility means I stop connecting every experience, every conversation, with myself. In fact, I stop thinking about myself. The freedom of self forgetfulness.”
– Tim Keller, The Freedom of Self-Forgetfulness

Have this mind among yourselves which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.
Philippians 2:5–8

“Christ is the humility of God embodied in human nature; the Eternal Love humbling itself, clothing itself in the garb of meekness and gentleness, to win and serve and save us.”
– Andrew Murray, Humility

Call To Worship: At The Cross

Most merciful God,

thank You for sending to us Your Son, Jesus.
We remember this day His redeeming death,
that we might stand forgiven at the cross.

Thank You for sending to us Your Son, Jesus,
to whom we belong, in life and in death.
He bore our infirmities and carried our sorrows. Most holy God,
thank You for sending to us Your Son, Jesus,
who became sin for us and suffered
the punishment due to us,
that we might stand forgiven at the cross.
In the name of our Lord Jesus, amen.

Prayer

Henry Scougal 17thc Scottish theologian, minister and author, and professor of divinity at King’s College University of Aberdeen.  He is best known for his work,  The Life of God in the Soul of Man, originally written to a friend to explain Christianity. Leaders of the Great Awakening loved the book, and George Whitefield was quoted as saying he never really understood what true religion was until he read Scougal’s treatise. Our prayer today is taken from that work, and is for us to be filled with God’s word and truth, that we might love the world.

Fill our souls with such a deep sense and full persuasion of those great truths which thou hast revealed in the gospel, as may influence and regulate our whole conversation; and that the life which we henceforth live in the flesh, we may live through faith in the Son of God. O that the infinite perfections of thy blessed nature, and the astonishing expressions of thy goodness and love, may conquer and overpower our hearts, that they may be constantly rising toward thee in flames of the devoutest affection, and enlarging themselves in sincere and cordial love towards all the world, for thy sake.

Call To Worship: Let Us Go to the House of the Lord

LEADER:  I was glad when they said to me, let us go to the house of the Lord!
PEOPLE:   Praise the Lord!  For it is good to sing praises to our God!

LEADER:  Great is our Lord, and abundant in power; His understanding is beyond measure.
PEOPLE:  Blessed is he whose hope is in the Lord, who made heaven and earth, the sea and all that is in them.

LEADER:  The Lord will reign forever, your God, O Zion, to all generations.
ALL:  Let everything that has breath praise the Lord!  Praise the Lord!

Prayer: George Matheson (1842-1906)

Dear Lord, I thank Thee that Thy love constraineth me. I thank Thee that, in the great labyrinth of life, Thou waitest not for my consent to lead me. I thank Thee that Thou leadest me by a way which I know not, by a way which is above the level of my own poor understanding. I thank Thee that Thou art not repelled by my bitterness, that Thou art not turned aside by the heat of my spirit. There is no force in this universe so glorious as the force of Thy love; it compels me to come in. Amen.

Creed: What is Grace

LEADER:  What is grace?
PEOPLE:  Grace is God’s undeserved gift of His love, mercy and help, which He freely offers to us who, because of our sin, deserve only condemnation.

LEADER:  For what purpose does God give you grace?
PEOPLE:  God gives me grace in Christ for the forgiveness of my sins, redemption from sin’s power, healing of sin’s effects and growth in holiness to my final transformation into the likeness of Christ.

LEADER:  Can you earn God’s grace?
PEOPLE:  No. God gives His grace freely and enables me to receive it. Everything I do for God should be in response to His love and grace made known in Christ, for “while we were still sinners, Christ died for us,” and “we love because He first loved us.”

Call To Worship: Bless the Lord

LEADER:  Bless the Lord at all times; let His praise continually be in your mouth.
PEOPLE:  My tongue shall tell of Your righteousness and of Your praise all the day long.

LEADER:  Oh, magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt His name together!
PEOPLE:  We will tell to the coming generation the glorious deeds of the Lord, and His might and the wonders that He has done.

ALL:  You are great, O Lord God, for there is none like You and there is no God besides You!

Classic Prayer: David

One of his classic prayers, expressing the longing of all of our hearts… Psalm 25:4,5

Show me your ways, O Lord
Teach me Your paths
Lead me in Your truth and teach me
For You are the God of my salvation;
On You I wait all the day.

Creed: What is the Gospel?

LEADER:  What is the human condition?
PEOPLE:  Though created good and made for fellowship with our Creator, humanity has been cut off from God by self-centered rebellion against Him, leading to lawless living, guilt, shame, death and the fear of judgment. This is the state of sin.

LEADER:  What is the Gospel?
PEOPLE:  The Gospel is the good news that God loves the world and offers salvation from sin through His Son, Jesus Christ.

LEADER:  What does God desire to accomplish in your life in Christ?
PEOPLE:  God desires to free me from captivity to sin and transform me into the image of Jesus Christ, by the power of His Holy Spirit.

Mark 4:35-41 – Jesus and the Storms of Life

Jim Thomas, Senior Pastor

Mark 4:35-41

  1. Following Jesus doesn’t mean we will always have smooth sailing.
    • Storms of Correction
    • Storms of Perfection
  2. Following Jesus does mean we will always have a Savior to turn to.
  3. When you have a healthy fear of God, you don’t need to have an unhealthy fear of anything else.

Who is Jesus?

How should we respond to Jesus?

“God whispers to us in our pleasures, speaks in our conscience, but shouts in our pains: it is His megaphone to rouse a deaf world.”

– C.S. Lewis, The Problem of Pain

“Thinking people know that the problems facing us – bewildering in their number, magnitude and complexity – are beyond us. Only a return to the living God who created us, sustains us and can remake us through Christ, and a recovery of the authentic Christian faith in its biblical fullness and contemporary relevance, can enable us, with confidence and without fear, to look forward to the Year 2000 A.D.”

– John Stott

“‘Do not fear, for I am with you; do not anxiously look about you, for I am your God. I will strengthen

you, surely I will help you; surely I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.’”

– Isaiah 41:10

“‘Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name; you are mine! When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they will not overflow you.’”

– Isaiah 43:1-2

“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.”

– Proverbs 1:7

“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.”

– Proverbs 9:10

“The fear of the LORD prolongs life, but the years of the wicked will be shortened.”

– Proverbs 10:27

“In the fear of the LORD there is strong confidence, and His children will have refuge.”

– Proverbs 14:26

“The fear of the LORD is a fountain of life, that one may avoid the snares of death.”

– Proverbs 14:27

“The fear of the LORD leads to life, so that one may sleep satisfied, untouched by evil.”

– Proverbs 19:23

“When pain is to be borne, a little courage helps more than much knowledge, a little human sympathy more than much courage, and the least tincture of the love of God more than all.”

– C.S. Lewis, The Problem of Pain

Classic Prayer: Philip Melanchthon 1497-1560

A noted collaborator with Martin Luther in the Protestant Reformation, Melanchthon was a German Lutheran reformer, and an intellectual designer of educational systems. An article on the Desiring God website says that Melanchthon was “not the kind who started revolutions, but the kind who brought order to the ensuing chaos. … Luther was a pioneer, hacking his way through centuries of superstitious brush with an apostolic machete. But Melanchthon… played the part of the calm, collected systematic, grading the Protestant path for generations to come.

Matthew 20 – The Upside-Down Kingdom of Jesus

Pastor Jim Thomas

Matthew: The King and His Kingdom

  1. We must beware begrudging the generosity of God’s grace towards others. (v. 1-16; “The Parable of the Workers in the Vineyard”)
  2. The paradox that the cross becomes the power of salvation (v. 17-19)
  3. Our endemic lust for privilege, prestige and power (v. 20-28)
  4. Jesus shows compassion on all who cry out for His mercy. (v. 29-34)

“Jesus’s message is as uncomfortable as it is destabilizing; in the kingdom of God, all the petty calculating hierarchies of merit and virtue by which we compulsively rank ourselves against others are dashed aside to make way for a richer ethic of generosity. Our petty bastions of social superiority are unceremoniously flattened by the generous juggernaut of the kingdom of God” – Christopher Watkin, Biblical Critical Theory: How the Bible’s Unfolding Story Makes Sense of Modern Life and Culture

“The death of Christ in utter weakness would turn out to be the demonstration of the saving power of God that will ultimately destroy all powers of evil and violence. What a paradox! But it lies at the heart of the Gospel.” – Christopher J.H. Wright, To the Cross: Proclaiming the Gospel from the Upper Room to Calvary

“Most of the trouble caused in this world is by people wanting to be important.” – T.S. Elliot

“Grace and mercy are both expressions of God’s love, grace to the guilty and undeserving, mercy to the needy and helpless. Peace is that restoration of harmony with God, others and self which we call ‘salvation.’ Put together, peace indicates the character of salvation, mercy our need of it and grace God’s free provision of it in Christ.” – John Stott

“Our prayers may be awkward. Our attempts may be feeble. But since the power of prayer is in the one who hears it and not in the one who says it, our prayers do make a difference.” – Max Lucado

SERMON NOTES

Outline of Matthew 8-9

  • 3 miracles (8:1-17)
  • 2 teachings on Discipleship (8:18-22)
  • 3 miracles (8:23-9:8)
  • 2 teachings on Discipleship (9:9-17)
  • 3 Miracles (9:18-34)

“The man wanted to follow Jesus, but not just yet. He knew it was good and that he should do it, but he felt there was a good reason why he could not do it now. If the scribe was too quick in promising, this ‘disciple’ was too slow in performing.”
– D.A. Carson

“When Jesus speaks, leprosy, paralysis and fever obey. The question is, do you?”
– David Platt

Exhortations

  1. Following Jesus involves our unconditional trust.
  2. Following Jesus involves our undivided affections.
  3. Following Jesus involves His unfailing presence

“Following Jesus may mean losing everything in this world. This is another problem with the prosperity gospel – it makes Jesus a means to an end. You come to Jesus to get health, wealth, or anything else you want; just fill in the blank. The problem is that you shouldn’t come to Jesus to get stuff; you come to Jesus to get Jesus. You may lose everything in this world, but He is enough.”
– David Platt

“Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For His sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ.”
– Philippians 3:8

“Most of us have chosen heaven over hell, but not many of us have chosen heaven over earth.”
– Erik Reed

Our faith is not that trials and hard times will never come our way.

Our faith is confidence that no matter whatever kind of storms, winds and waves come your way in this world, the God of the universe will be right there in the boat with you.
