Call To Worship: At The Cross

Most merciful God,
thank You for sending to us your Son, Jesus.
We remember this day His redeeming death,
that we might stand forgiven at the cross.

Thank You for sending to us Your Son, Jesus,
to whom we belong, in life and in death.
He bore our infirmities and carried our sorrows.

Most holy God,
thank You for sending to us Your Son, Jesus,
who became sin for us and suffered the punishment due to us,
that we might stand forgiven at the cross.

In the name of our Lord Jesus, amen.

Classic Prayer: Philip Melanchthon 1497-1560

A noted collaborator with Martin Luther in the Protestant Reformation, Melanchthon was a German Lutheran reformer, and an intellectual designer of educational systems. An article on the Desiring God website says that Melanchthon was “not the kind who started revolutions, but the kind who brought order to the ensuing chaos. … Luther was a pioneer, hacking his way through centuries of superstitious brush with an apostolic machete. But Melanchthon… played the part of the calm, collected systematic, grading the Protestant path for generations to come.

I give thanks to you, Almighty God, for revealing yourself to me, for sending your Son Jesus Christ, that he might become a sacrifice, that through him I might be forgiven and receive eternal life. I give thanks to you, O God, for making me a recipient of your great favor through the Gospel and for preserving your Word and the Church. O that I might truly declare your goodness and blessings! Inspire me, I earnestly pursue you, and ask that the Holy Spirit would urge thanksgiving to shine forth in my life… Enlighten my heart, that I may be more fully aware of your favor toward me and forever worship you with true thanksgiving.
