Ephesians 6:5-9

Welcome to Timeless Truth with Pastor Jim Thomas. In season 1, Pastor Jim is leading us in a study of Ephesians.  Today’s passage is Ephesians 6:5-9.

Instructions for Christian servants and masters

Fourfold instructions for servants to obey their masters, each with an “as” phrase attached either before or after

  1. 5b: serve with fear and trembling, in sincerity…as to Christ
  2. 6a: serve not merely to be seen…as pleasing men
  3. 6b: serve as slaves of Christ…doing the will of God
  4. 7: with good will… as serving the Lord

“The heart of genuine worship is the working out in every aspect of our lives the confession ‘Jesus is Lord.’”
– D.A. Carson

“The way of the cross is utterly incompatible with self-serving.”
– Rico Tice, Faithful Leaders

“As we refuse to be preoccupied with ourselves and our own importance and seek to love and serve others, it will reorient us from self-centeredness to other-centeredness—to serving and caring for others just as Jesus did for us. In the narcissistic culture of contemporary America, this is a particularly powerful countercultural witness of Christ’s presence and lordship in our lives.”
– Thomas A. Tarrants, President Emeritus of the C. S. Lewis Institute
