Ephesians 1:1-2

Welcome to Timeless Truth with Pastor Jim Thomas. In season 1, Pastor Jim is leading us in a study of Ephesians.  Today’s passage is Ephesians 1:1-2.

Chapters 1-3
– Belief
– Doctrine
– Indicatives
– What Christ has done

Chapters 4-6
– Behavior

– Imperatives
– How we respond

“In Christ” shows up 13 times. 10 of these in chapter 1 alone. Plus, “in Him” appears 8 times in Ephesians. The concept of the believer’s union with Christ is central to Ephesians.

Trinity = God is three in person, one in essence.

  • God the Father = planning, choosing and calling us
  • God the Son = saving and redeeming us
  • God the Holy Spirit = sanctifying and sealing us

Saul & Paul were the apostle’s Hebrew and Latin names.

New Testament writings had three contexts:
Political context was Roman
Cultural context was Greek
Religious context was Jewish

Christians have two addresses:
The saints were 1. At Ephesus and 2. In Christ Jesus. 
What might it mean to Christ that you are “at” your city? 
What could it mean to your city that you are “in” Christ?
