Call To Worship: Advent Hope

Like the shepherds, we wait and watch for the appearing of the mystery of our great Savior – Jesus Christ.

O hope of heaven, come to hopeless earth, and be found in us today.

God has made known the riches, of the glory, of this mystery: Christ in you, the hope of glory.

And this God of all hope will fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.

Christ, the hope of all the earth, the joy of every longing heart, be found in us today.

Classic Prayer: Basil the Great

For Right Blessings
O Lord our God, teach us, we beseech Thee, to ask Thee aright for the right blessings. Steer Thou the vessel of our life toward Thyself, Thou tranquil Haven of all storm-tossed souls. Show us the course wherein we should go. Renew a willing spirit within us. Let Thy Spirit curb our wayward senses, and guide and enable us unto that which is our true good, to keep Thy laws, and in all our works evermore to rejoice in Thy glorious and gladdening Presence. For Thine is the glory and praise from all Thy saints forever and ever. Amen.

Call To Worship: Advent Joy

My soul magnifies the Lord
And my Spirit rejoices in God my Savior!

For the Word became flesh and dwelt among us,
and we have seen His glory:
glory as of the only Son from the Father,
full of grace and truth.

No more let sins and sorrows grow,
nor thorns infest the ground.
He has come to make His blessings flow
far as the curse is found!

Rejoice in the Lord! Again I say, rejoice!
This is the day that the Lord has made.
My soul magnifies the Lord
And my Spirit rejoices in God my Savior!

Creed: Confession of Sin

Most merciful God,
we confess that we have sinned against You this day, in thought, word, and deed;
by what we have done, and by what we have left undone.

We have not loved You with our whole hearts;
we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.
We are truly sorry and we humbly repent.

For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us,
that we may delight in Your will, and walk in Your ways, to the glory of Your Name.

Grant to Your people pardon and peace,
that in Your great mercy, we may be forgiven all our sins,
and serve You with a quiet and contrite heart.

In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, amen.

Classic Prayer: Gelasian Sacramentary

Almighty God, who alone canst order the unruly wills and affections of sinful men; grant unto thy people that they may love the thing which thou commandest, and desire that which thou dost promise; that so, among the sundry and manifold changes of the world, our hearts may surely there be fixed, where true joys are to be found; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Call To Worship: Advent Love

This is love: not that we loved God,
but that He loved us and sent His Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.

This is love, not that we were good enough, even lovely enough,
but that God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten,
that whoever believes, would have life, everlasting life.

This is love: God, being rich in mercy, even when we were dead in our sins,
made us alive together with Christ — by grace we have been saved.

And this is love – love the Lord your God with all your heart,
with all your soul, with all your strength and with all your mind,
and your neighbor as yourself.

Creed: God Sent His Son, Jesus

Leader:  Who is Jesus Christ?

People:  Jesus Christ is the eternal Word and Son of God, the second Person of the Holy Trinity. He took on human nature to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world, the only Mediator between God and fallen humanity.

Leader: Why did God send His Son into the world?

People: For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through Him.

Leader: Why did God give us His Son?

People: For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.

Classic Prayer: John Baillie, A Diary of Private Prayer

O God, who has proven Your love for all humanity by sending us Jesus Christ our Lord, and has illuminated our human life by the radiance of His presence, I give You thanks for this Your greatest gift.

For my Lord’s days upon the earth:
For the record of His deeds of love:
For the words he spoke for my guidance and help:
For His obedience unto death:
For His triumph over death:
For the presence of His Spirit within me now:
I thank you, O God.

Grant that the remembrance of the blessed Life that once was lived out on this common earth under these ordinary skies may remain with me in all the tasks and duties of this day. And in each of these ways give me grace to follow in His footsteps. Amen.

Sing the glory of his name;
Give to him glorious praise!
Oh sing to the Lord a new song,
For he has done marvelous things!

The Lord has made known his salvation;
All the ends of the earth have seen
The salvation of our God.
Shout for joy to God, all the earth.
Give to him glorious praise!

Creed: ACNA: Salvation, Questions 11, 12, 15

Leader: What does it mean to repent?
People: To repent means that I have a change of heart, turning from sin- fully serving myself- to serving God as I follow Jesus Christ. I need God’s help to make this change.

Leader: What does it mean to have faith?
People: To have faith means that I believe the Gospel is the truth: that Jesus died for my sins, rose from the dead, and rules over my life. Therefore, I entrust myself to him as my Savior, and I obey him as my Lord.

Leader: What does God grant in your new life in Christ?
People: God grants me reconciliation with him, forgiveness of my sins, union with him in Christ, adoption into his family, citizenship in his kingdom, new life in the Holy Spirit, and the promise of eternal life.

Classic Prayer: The Book of Common Prayer

Accept, O Lord, our thanks and praise for all that you have done for us. We thank you for the splendor of the whole creation, for the beauty of this world, for the wonder of life, and for the mystery of love.

We thank you for the blessing of family and friends, and for the loving care which surrounds us on every side.

We thank you for setting us at tasks which demand our best efforts, and for leading us to accomplishments which satisfy and delight us.

We thank you also for those disappointments and failures that lead us to acknowledge our dependence on you alone.

Above all, we thank you for your Son Jesus Christ; for the truth of his Word and the example of his life; for his steadfast obedience, by which he overcame temptation; for his dying, through which he overcame death; and for his rising to life again, in which we are raised to the life of your kingdom.

Grant us the gift of your Spirit, that we may know him and make him known; and through him, at all times and in all places, may give thanks to you in all things. Amen.

Call To Worship: Come, Let Us Worship

Come, let us worship God the Father, the maker of heaven and earth! Let us worship Jesus Christ, the resurrected King of Kings and Lord of Lords! Let us worship the Holy Spirit, the promised comforter and counselor! All glory and praise be to the one true God, now and forevermore, amen!

Creed: The Apostles’ Creed

We believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord: Who was conceived of the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He arose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from there He shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy universal church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.

Classic Prayer: George Matheson

Dear Lord, I thank Thee
that Thy love constraineth me.

I thank Thee
that, in the great labyrinth of life, Thou waitest not for my consent to lead me.

I thank Thee
that Thou leadest me by a way which I know not, by a way which is above the level of my own poor understanding.

I thank Thee
that Thou art not repelled by my bitterness,
that Thou art not turned aside by the heat of my spirit.
There is no force in this universe so glorious as the force of Thy love; it compels me to come in.
Amen.

Call To Worship: There Is None Like You

There is none like you among the gods, O Lord, Nor are there any works like yours.
All the nations you have made shall come And worship before you, O Lord,
And shall glorify your name.
For you are great and do wondrous things; You alone are God.
Teach us your ways, O Lord, That we may walk in your truth;
Unite our hearts to fear your name.
We give thanks to you, O Lord our God, with our whole hearts,
And we will glorify your name forever.
Psalm 86:8-12

Classic Prayer: Augustine

For your mercies’ sake, O Lord my God, remind me who you are to me. Say to my soul: “I am your salvation.” So speak that I may hear, O Lord; my heart is listening; open it that it may hear you, and say to my soul: “I am your salvation.” After hearing this word, may I come in haste to take hold of you. Hide not your face from me. The house of my soul is too small to receive you; let it be enlarged by you. It is all in ruins; would you repair it. There are things in it – I confess and I know – that must offend your sight. But only you shall cleanse it. Only to you shall I cry out. From my sins cleanse me, O Lord, these things your servant prays. Amen.

The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.
He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: He leadeth me beside the still waters.
He restoreth my soul: He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; Thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: Thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: And I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.
Amen

Classic Prayer: Elisabeth Elliot

Loving Lord and heavenly Father, I offer up today all that I am, all that I have, all that I do, and all that I suffer, to be Yours today and Yours forever.
Give me grace, Lord, to do all that I know of Your holy will.
Purify my heart, sanctify my thinking, correct my desires.
Teach me, in all of today’s work and trouble and joy, to respond with honest praise, simple trust, and instant obedience, that my life may be in truth a living sacrifice, by the power of Your Holy Spirit and in the name of Your Son Jesus Christ, my Master and my all.

Give us such an awareness of your mercies, that with truly thankful hearts

by giving up ourselves to your service,
 and by walking before you in holiness
 and righteousness all our days;
Through Jesus Christ our Redeemer, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be all honor and glory now and forever.
Amen! Amen! Amen!

Classic Prayer: Elizabeth Fry

Lord, be with me, and help me by your Spirit, to perform all my duties to Your praise.
I pray You be very near to us all; protect us by Your providential care over us, and above all, further visit us by Your love, power and Spirit.
Oh Lord turn us, and we shall be turned; help us, and we shall be helped; keep us, and we shall be kept.
Amen.

Call To Worship: A Congregational Prayer

Lord, fill our hearts with reverence for You. Make us hunger for Your Word and passionately desire to walk in Your ways.
Forgive us our sins, for they are many. Give us a greater glimpse of Your glory as we offer You this praise and worship.
We thank You for the way You have rescued us over and over, through many difficult things.
Come now and help us in this: to place our trust, hope, and confidence in You.
May Your name be honored in our conduct.
May Your kingdom be made visible in our relationships.
May Your will be done in our hearts and minds.
This we pray in the Name above all names, Jesus Christ, to Whom belongs all glory, forever and ever, amen!

Classic Prayer: Dwight L. Moody

Our Heavenly Father, we pray that thy blessing may rest on each one of us who profess to be Christians. O Lord, help us to love Christ more than we love ourselves: help us to be more like him in our way of life. Help us, O Lord, to walk humbly, prayerfully, consistently on, in the dust of our pilgrimage so that men may not stumble over us and say, “They profess only; they never do anything.” O God, help us to live up to what we profess, through thee, in Christ Jesus, and may it be shown in each one of us.We pray for those also without God and without hope. We pray for the unsaved in this assembly. O God, let them meet thee here and now. O God! touch their hearts. …May the wanderers, who have drawn back and rejected thee for years, open the door of their hearts and welcome thee in. We pray that the power coming forth from this meeting may be felt on the shores of eternity. O God of Adam and God of our Fathers, hear our cry and bring salvation; and may many this day receive the gift of God… May the Spirit of God be poured out on this church and on all thy churches; and may many be drawn to thee and love thee. May your work go on everywhere we pray thee, and Christ shall have the glory. Amen.

On the glorious splendor of your majesty, and on your wondrous works, I will meditate.
They shall speak of the might of your awesome deeds, and I will declare your greatness.

The Lord is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.
The Lord is good to all, and his mercy is over all that he has made.”
Psalm 145:3-9

Classic Prayer: Philip Doddridge

Blessed God, I humbly adore you as the great Father for lights, and the Giver of every good and every perfect gift. May I be renewed in the spirit of my mind, and may the same mind be in me which was also in Christ Jesus. May I walk by faith, and not by sight, and be strong in faith, giving glory to you God. Work in my heart the kind of godliness which is profitable for all things, and teach me by the influence of your blessed Spirit to love you with all my heart, soul, mind and strength. Amen.

Project Connect Nashville

Project Connect Nashville exists to break the poverty cycle through relationship, resources, and education in partnership with the local church. Their desire is to build relationships with individuals stuck in the cycle of poverty and connect them to the faith community. Poverty is not just a lack of financial resources, it’s brokenness in all areas of a person’s life. This includes finances, transportation, work, healthcare, housing, education, relationships and the church. They seek to heal areas of brokenness and guide the church in being a part of the mending process. For more information visit https://projectconnectnashville.org.

Final Command Ministries

In response to God, Final Command Ministries exists to catalyze disciple-making movements. In Northern Africa, they have been called by God to the least-reached Muslim people groups. They bring the shalom of Jesus where it does not exist. This involves water projects where there is no clean water, training indigenous workers in village medicine, helping agricultural projects, etc. From these ministries they are looking for persons of peace who are open to God and His Word. Through Discovery Groups the Holy Spirit  works through the Word of God to create the people of God. Ordinary people become disciple makers who make disciple makers. Final Command Ministries is committed to working alongside the African church and they do not send Western missionaries to Africa as long-term workers. They believe the call of God is on the African Church to reach the unengaged people groups on their own continent and beyond.This approach has seen over 500,000 Muslims come to faith in Jesus on the continent of Africa in the last 15 years. Classic Prayer: Dallas Willard

Dear Lord Jesus Christ –
We are so thankful that you have said,
“Fear not, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom.”
We are thankful for the ease with which you walked upon this earth,
the generosity and kindness you showed to people,
the devotion with which you cared for those who were out of the way and in trouble,
the extent to which you even loved your enemies and laid down your life for them.
We are so thankful to believe that this is a life for us, a life without lack; a life of sufficiency.
It’s so clear in you, the sufficiency of your Father and the fullness of life that was poured through you,
and we’re so thankful that you have promised the same love, the same life, the same joy, and the same power for us.
Lord, slip up on us today. Get past our defenses, our worries, our concerns.
Gently open our souls and speak your word into them.
We believe you want to do it, and we wait for you to do it now.
In your name, Amen

Classic Prayer: Matthew Henry

You are the King eternal, immortal, invisible. Before the mountains were brought forth or you had formed the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God. You are the same yesterday, today and forever. At the beginning of time you laid the foundation of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands. They shall perish, but you endure. All of them shall age as though they were articles of clothing. You shall treat them as a change of garments, and they shall be discarded. But you are the same, and your years shall never end. You are the same, yesterday, today, and forever. (Hebrews 13:8)

Praise the LORD!
I will give thanks to the LORD with all my heart,
In the company of the upright and in the assembly.
Great are the works of the LORD;
They are studied by all who delight in them.
Splendid and majestic is His work,
And His righteousness endures forever.
He has made His wonders to be remembered; The LORD is gracious and compassionate.
He has given food to those who fear Him; He will remember His covenant forever.
He has made known to His people the power of His works, In giving them the heritage of the nations.
The works of His hands are truth and justice; All His precepts are sure.
They are upheld forever and ever;
They are performed in truth and uprightness.
He has sent redemption to His people; He has ordained His covenant forever; Holy and awesome is His name.
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom; A good understanding have all those who do His commandments;
His praise endures forever.

Classic Prayer: John Calvin

Grant, Almighty God, that as you have once adopted us, and you continue to confirm your favor by calling us unceasingly to yourself, and do not only chastise us, but also gently and paternally invite us to yourself, and exhort us at the same time to repentance…0 grant that we may not be so hardened as to resist your goodness, nor abuse this your incredible forbearance, but submit ourselves in obedience to you; that whenever you may severely chastise us, we may bear your corrections with genuine submission of faith, and not continue un-tameable and obstinate to the last, but return to you, the only fountain of life and salvation, that as you have once begun in us a good work, so you will perfect it to the day of our Lord. Most merciful God, thank you for sending to us your Son, Jesus.
We remember this day his redeeming death, that we might stand forgiven at the cross.
Thank you for sending to us your Son, Jesus, to whom we belong, in life and in death.
He bore our infirmities and carried our sorrows.
Most holy God, thank you for sending to us your Son, Jesus,
who became sin for us and suffered the punishment due to us,
that we might stand forgiven at the cross.
In the name of our Lord Jesus, amen.

Classic Prayer: Cornelius Plantinga

O God, your people give you hearty thanks for your matchless grace.
Rescuer of the shamed, you read into human pits to lift the fallen.
We sink into addiction, and you come to heal.
We sink into folly, and you come to correct.
We sink into corruption, and you come to sanctify.
Refuge of all who suffer, we look for shelter in the shadow of your wings.
Rain and hail and wind beat on your wings, but they do not fold.
They are spread like Jesus’s arms on the cross, spread out to protect all who seek shelter beneath them.
O God, wondrous in love for sinners, we give you thanks for your saving grace.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Call To Worship: Almighty and Eternal God

Almighty and Eternal God, You are hidden from my sight:
You are beyond my understanding, Your thoughts are not my thoughts, Your ways are a mystery.
Yet You make a way for me to find You, to be found by You.
You have breathed your Spirit into me. You have formed my mind to seek You.
You have inclined my heart to love You. You have made me restless for the rest that is in You.
You have planted within me a hunger and thirst, only satisfied by the Bread of Life, the Living Water.
Thank You, for Your waiting presence, Your tender mercies, Your unshaming forgiveness, Your pursuing love, Your trustworthy refuge, thank You for courage for what You call me to.
Today, tomorrow and the next, we give You praise, honor and glory, Almighty, and Eternal God.

The heavens declare Your glory,
The earth belongs to You,

You have created us for Your pleasure and filled us with life.
In You we live and move and have our being.
Your providence has set the boundaries of life
And You wisely administer all our affairs.

We thank you for the riches we have in Christ Jesus,
For the unclouded vision He brings of You,
That we may behold Your beauty,
Your character and grace,
And that we may know Your love and mercy.

In the matchless name of Jesus Christ we pray, Amen.

I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart;
I will recount all of your wonderful deeds.
I will be glad and exult in you;
I will sing praise to your name, O Most High.

The Lord sits enthroned forever;
He has established his throne for justice,
And he judges the world with righteousness;
He judges the peoples with uprightness.

The Lord is a stronghold for the oppressed,
A stronghold in times of trouble.
And those who know your name put their trust in you,
For you, O Lord, have not forsaken those who seek you.

Sing praises to the Lord, who sits enthroned in Zion!
Tell among the peoples his deeds!
Sing praises to the Lord, who sits enthroned in Zion!
Amen!

Call To Worship: Instruments of Righteousness

O Lord our God, as we pause this week to give You thanks,
We offer ourselves to become instruments of Your righteousness.

May our desire be to honor Your name.
May our minds love Your truth.
May our lips speak boldly to spread Your Gospel.
May our feet walk in Your ways.

May our tongues bring healing, mercy and grace.
May our arms embrace the lonely and the unloved.
May our hands lift up those who are tired and weak.
May our ears listen for the cries of the distressed and downtrodden.

May our strength be spent in working for justice.
May we be slow to anger and quick to forgive.
May our eyes gaze humbly and patiently towards heaven.
May we be whole and wholly Thine.

This we pray in the name of Christ our Redeemer. Amen.

Call To Worship: Psalm 121

I lift up my eyes to the hills.
From where does my help come?
My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.

He will not let your foot be moved;
He who keeps you will not slumber.
Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

The Lord is your keeper;
The Lord is your shade on your right hand.
The sun shall not strike you by day, nor the moon by night.

The Lord will keep you from all evil;
He will keep your life.
The Lord will keep your going out and your coming in from this time forth and forevermore.

Call To Worship: Psalm 33

ALL:
Shout for joy in the LORD, O you righteous!
Praise befits the upright.
Give thanks to the LORD with the lyre;
make melody to him with the harp of ten strings!
Sing to him a new song; play skillfully on the strings, with loud shouts.

MEN:
For the word of the LORD is upright,
and all his work is done in faithfulness.
He loves righteousness and justice;
the earth is full of the steadfast love of the LORD.

WOMEN:
By the word of the LORD the heavens were made
and by the breath of his mouth all their host.
He gathers the waters of the sea as a heap;
he puts the deeps in storehouses.

ALL:
Let all the earth fear the LORD;
let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him!
For he spoke, and it came to be;
he commanded, and it stood firm.

Call To Worship: The Heavens Declare the Glory of God

The heavens declare the glory of God,
And the sky above proclaims his handiwork.
Day to day pours out speech,
And night to night reveals knowledge.

There is no speech, nor are there words,
Whose voice is not heard.
Their voice goes out through all the earth,
And their words to the end of the world.

The law of the Lord is perfect,
The testimony of the Lord is sure.
The precepts of the Lord are right,
The commandment of the Lord is pure.
The rules of the Lord are true,
And righteous altogether.

Declare me innocent from hidden faults.
Keep back your servant also from presumptuous sins;
Let them not have dominion over me!

Let the words of my mouth
And the meditation of my heart
Be acceptable in your sight,
O Lord, my rock and my redeemer!

Call To Worship: Let God Be Honored

Praise and honor wait for You, oh God,
And to render them is my noblest endeavor.
Worship is due from all Your creatures,
for all Your works display Your attributes
and declare Your glory!

The sea and dry land,
the winter cold and summer heat,
Morning light and evening shade,
all are filled with Your presence!

You are King of Kings and Lord of Lords!
At Your pleasure empires rise and fall;
All Your works praise You and all Your saints bless You.
Let me be numbered with the ancient ones.
Let me resemble them in character and condition.
Let me sit with them at the feet of Jesus
with an open heart and a listening ear.

May my faith be rooted in Your Word,
My understanding informed by Your Spirit.
May my affections be holy and heavenly,
May my motives be simple and pure.
As I give You my heart, let me be wholly Thine.

In the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, amen!

Call To Worship: Lord Of All Our Days

O God, You are Lord of all our days and all our nights.
Every star in heaven answers Your call
and offers their joyful obedience.
As we come to worship You today,
Stir our hearts to respond to You in like manner.

As we end one week and begin another
Grant us the peace of knowing we belong to You.
Open our eyes to see the security of Your sovereignty
And the wonders of Your love.

To Your care we commend our souls.
To Your will we bow our own.
To Your grace we happily surrender,
Receiving from You what we have not deserved.

Now we raise our glad hallelujahs!
Now we offer You all glory and praise!

O Creator God,
be blessed to receive our most grateful thanksgivings.
Let every heart shout it aloud, Amen! Amen!

Call To Worship: There Is None Like You

Psalm 86:8-12

There is none like you among the gods, O Lord, Nor are there any works like yours.

All the nations you have made shall come And worship before you, O Lord, And shall glorify your name.

For you are great and do wondrous things; You alone are God.

Teach us your ways, O Lord, That we may walk in your truth; Unite our hearts to fear your name.

We give thanks to you, O Lord our God, with our whole hearts, And we will glorify your name forever.
