Matthew 5:1-12, Week 2
The Beatitudes
The Sermon on the Mount is perhaps the most famous sermon in history and its opening lines are some of the most well known. Often called The Beatitudes, they describe what Jesus calls a “blessed” life.
Each of the Beatitudes is stated in three parts: a pronouncement of blessing, a disposition of the heart or condition in life, and the benefit that accompanies those hearts and lives thusly described.
As beloved as this passage has become, the Beatitudes overflow with paradox and raise important questions. Are the Beatitudes a list of rules to follow or do they describe something else? How should we interpret and apply them in our lives? What is the meaning of the term “Blessed?”
Join Pastor Jim as he helps us ponder anew the wonder, the blessedness and beauty we find in the Beatitudes.
