Luke 24:36-53

Peace To You

On the evening of the resurrection, the disciples huddled together unsure what to make of the rumors and eyewitness accounts that Jesus was alive. Then suddenly, He stood among them. The same hands that had been pierced were now in front of them. The same voice that cried out on the cross now spoke peace into their despair. In that moment, the disciples were changed. The crucified one was not only alive—He was bodily present, eating with them, opening the Scriptures, and revealing that His suffering and resurrection were all part of God’s plan of redemption.

Join Pastor Tommy as we close our study through the Gospel of Luke and reflect on the astonishing reality of the risen Christ. His cross secured our forgiveness, His resurrection guarantees our future with Him.

Luke 24:36-53

Luke 24:36-53

Pastor Tommy Bailey

“Glory to God in the highest,
and on earth peace among those with whom He is pleased!”
Luke 2:14, emphasis added

1. Peace of God

  • The Resurrection of Jesus
  • Our Resurrection

2. Peace with God

  • The Cross of Jesus
  • Our Forgiveness

“One must keep on pointing out that Christianity is a statement which, if false, is of no importance, and, if true, of infinite importance. The one thing it cannot be is moderately important.”
C.S. Lewis, God in the Dock

“He will swallow up death forever;
and the Lord God will wipe away tears from all faces,
and the reproach of His people He will take away from all the earth,
for the Lord has spoken.”
Isaiah 25:8

“But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform our lowly body to be like His glorious body, by the power that enables Him even to subject all things to Himself.”
Philippians 3:20-21

“But someone will ask, “How are the dead raised? With what kind of body do they come?”
1 Corinthians 15:35

What will our resurrected bodies be like?

  • Free from death (1 Cor 15:42)
  • Free from sin (1 Cor 15:43)
  • Free from weakness (1 Cor 15:43)

“In terms of this life I am beginning to be past my prime. But my best physical days actually lie ahead of me rather than behind me. I don’t need to constantly look back on past glories or bemoan the encroaching limitations of age. This is the answer to our deep fear of missing out. I don’t need to worry about squeezing every last drop of pleasure out of this physical life when I can look forward to an eternity of enjoying the new creation in a resurrected body.”
Sam Allberry, What God Has to Say About Our Bodies

“He was crushed for our iniquities;
upon Him was the chastisement that brought us peace,
and with His wounds we are healed.”
Isaiah 53:5, emphasis added

“The cross stands as the focal point of the Christian faith. Without the cross the Bible is an enigma, and the Gospel of salvation is an empty hope.”
James Montgomery Boice

“Lord, now You are letting Your servant depart in peace,
according to Your word;
for my eyes have seen Your salvation
that You have prepared in the presence of all peoples,
a light for revelation to the Gentiles,
and for glory to Your people Israel.”
Luke 2:29-32

“Remember, therefore, it is not your hold of Christ that saves you—it is Christ; it is not your joy in Christ that saves you—it is Christ; it is not even faith in Christ, though that be the instrument—it is Christ’s blood and merits; therefore, look not so much to your hand with which you are grasping Christ, as to Christ…We shall never find happiness by looking at our prayers, our doings, or our feelings; it is what Jesus is, not what we are, that gives rest to the soul.”
Charles Spurgeon, Morning and Evening

Discussion Questions

  • Now that we’ve reached the end of Luke, how would you briefly describe Luke’s Gospel as compared to the other Gospels?
  • What evidence do we have that we will be given glorified bodies in the new creation as opposed to the idea that we will be disembodied spirits or ghosts? Does that provide hope?
  • What is the difference between the peace Jesus offers and the peace the world gives? What are they each rooted in?
  • What did Jesus mean when He said, “It is finished”?
  • Why is the cross the focal point of the Christian faith?
  • Verse 38 begins with the disciples being troubled and frightened, and verse 53 shows them praising. What robs you of peace in this world, and what is your consolation?

Call To Worship: At The Cross

Most merciful God, thank You for sending to us Your Son, Jesus. We remember this day His redeeming death, that we might stand forgiven at the cross. Thank You for sending to us Your Son, Jesus, to whom we belong, in life and in death. He bore our infirmities and carried our sorrows. Most holy God, thank You for sending to us Your Son, Jesus, who became sin for us and suffered the punishment due to us, that we might stand forgiven at the cross. In the name of our Lord Jesus, amen.

Confession of Sin:

Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against You this day, in thought, word, and deed; by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole hearts; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of Your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us, that we may delight in Your will, and walk in Your ways, to the glory of Your Name. Grant to Your people pardon and peace, that in Your great mercy, we may be forgiven all our sins, and serve You with a quiet and contrite heart. In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, amen.

Classic Prayer: John Ballie

O Holy Spirit of God, visit now this soul of mine, and tarry within it until eventide. Inspire all my thoughts. Pervade all my imaginations. Suggest all my decisions. Lodge in my will’s most inward citadel and order all my doings. Be with me in my silence and in my speech, in my haste and in my leisure, in company and in solitude, in the freshness of the morning and in the weariness of the evening; and give me grace at all times to rejoice in thy mysterious companionship.
