Mark 9:1-13

Welcome to Timeless Truth with Pastor Jim Thomas. In season 2, Pastor Jim is leading us in a study of Mark. Today’s passage is Mark 9:1-13.

1. The presence of Moses reminds us that in Jesus Christ the demands of the law of God have been fulfilled.

“For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.”
Romans 10:4

2. The presence of Elijah reminds us that in Jesus Christ the prophecies and promises of God are being fulfilled.

“For as many as are the promises of God, in Him they are yes; therefore also through Him is our Amen to the glory of God through us.”
2 Corinthians 1:20

“We don’t live on explanations, we live on promises, and the promises of God are based on the character of God.”
Warren Wiersbe, Be Amazed

3. The presence of God the Father reminds us that in Jesus Christ we are welcomed into the presence of God to worship without fear.

“For we did not follow cleverly devised tales when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of His majesty.  For when He received honor and glory from God the Father, such an utterance as this was made to Him by the Majestic Glory, “This is My beloved Son with whom I am well-pleased” — and we ourselves heard this utterance made from heaven when we were with Him on the holy mountain. So we have the prophetic word made more sure, to which you do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star arises in your hearts.”
2 Peter 1:16-19

“Our lifelong nostalgia, our longing to be reunited with something in the universe from which we now feel cut off, to be on the inside of some door which we have always seen from the outside, is no mere neurotic fancy, but the truest index of our real situation.”
C. S. Lewis, The Weight of Glory

  1. The Transfiguration reminds us of the nearness of heaven.
  2. The Transfiguration reminds us of the uniqueness of Jesus Christ.
  3. The Transfiguration reminds us of the salvation of Jesus Christ.

“Jesus does not point to the glory of God as Elijah, Moses, and every other prophet has done; Jesus is the glory of God in human form.”
Tim Keller

“The Son (Jesus) is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being.”
Hebrews 1:3

“The Incarnation may be devastating or rubbish but if we call it dull what in heavens name is worthy to be called exciting?”
Dorothy Sayers
