Mark 14:53-65

Welcome to Timeless Truth with Pastor Jim Thomas. In season 2, Pastor Jim is leading us in a study of Mark. Today’s passage is Mark Mark 14:53-65

  • The Last Passover and the First Lord’s Supper (14:12-26)
  • The Prediction of Peter’s Denial (14:27-31)
  • The Agony of Gethsemane (14:32-42)
  • The Betrayal and Arrest (14:43-52)
  • Jesus Before the Sanhedrin (14:53-65)
  • Peter’s Denial of Jesus (14:66-72)

Some have asked how we could possibly know all the details contained in this passage? There are at least two reasonable answers:

  1. Jesus related it all to His disciples after His resurrection
  2. Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus, both on the Jewish Sanhedrin, were likely standing right there during the whole thing.

“That the peoples of the Roman Empire came to worship as the Son of God not a warlord who had ruled them as emperor but a man who had suffered death at the hands of its soldiers was the marker of as profound a transformation in the understanding of power as any in human history.”
Tom Holland, author of Dominion: How the Christian Revolution Remade the World

“He (Jesus) knows what it is to be thirsty, hungry, despised, rejected, scorned, shamed, embarrassed, abandoned, misunderstood, falsely accused, suffocated, tortured, and killed. He knows what it is to be lonely.”
Dane Ortlund, Gentle and Lowly
