Friday Night Chats: Seven Days That Divide the World with Professor John Lennox

In January 2021, we welcomed Professor John Lennox from Oxford, England for an inspiring conversation hosted by Pastor Jim as part of our Friday Night Chats series. If you have ever had questions about the book of Genesis, the Creation account or if you have ever wondered what the Bible teaches about what it means to be a human person, we invite you to stream the conversation or read the transcription below.

Jim Thomas: Hey folks, I’m pastor Jim Thomas from The Village Chapel here in Nashville, Tennessee. Alongside me is Professor John C. Lennox, Professor of Mathematics in the University of Oxford., Fellow in Mathematics at the Philosophy of Science and Pastoral Advisor at Green Templeton College in Oxford. He’s the author of many books, including his widely popular God’s Undertaker: Has Science Buried God? and that speaks about the interface between science, philosophy and theology.

Professor John C. Lennox

As well, John has a book we’re going to be talking about today – Seven Days That Divide The World. I’m very excited about that because it coincides with our beginning of study at The Village Chapel here on the book of Genesis. Let me welcome John Lennox. John, you’re speaking to us over in England, I believe, right?

John C. Lennox: I am indeed. I’m just outside Oxford in the country, in the famous Cotswold country…

Jim: Been over there once or twice myself to England and so enjoyed each and every trip. I can just imagine what a delight it is to live right near Oxford there. Your history as I recall, your own story takes you– You’ve been in Oxford quite a bit. Were you a student there in university?

John: No, I grew up in Northern Ireland and then when I was about 18, 19, I went to Cambridge [to study] Mathematics. I spent seven years in Cambridge, did my PhD there and then took up a teaching post at the University of Wales where I was for over 27 years.

Jim: Wow.

John: Then I went from there to the University of Oxford and I’ve been 20 odd years here. I’ve been around a little bit.

Jim: That’s true. Of course, you speak widely, you’ve written many other books as well. We’re going to actually talk about the seven days book in a little bit, but I also think folks would be really curious about your book Where Is God In A Coronavirus World? How has that been received, John?

John C. Lennox - Where is God in a Coronavirus World

John: That’s been received wonderfully well. What happened was that when we were told that this was a serious not only epidemic, but pandemic, I thought we’re going to be shut in and what am I going to be able to do? I thought that perhaps I could try to write something that would help Christians particularly, but not only them to understand the nature of the pandemic and to look at it from a biblical point of view because it raises a huge series of questions.

Call to Worship

The Shield of Saint Patrick
I bind unto myself today
the strong name of the Trinity,
by invocation of the same,
the Three in One, the One in Three.

I bind this day to me forever
by power of faith Christ’s incarnation,
His baptism in the Jordan river,
His death on the cross for my salvation;

His bursting from the spiced tomb,
His riding up the heavenly way,
His coming at the day of doom,
I bind unto myself today.

Christ be with me, Christ within me,
Christ behind me, Christ before me,
Christ beside me, Christ to win me;
Christ to comfort and restore me;

Christ beneath me, Christ above me,
Christ in quiet, Christ in danger,
Christ in hearts of all that love me,
Christ in mouth of friend and stranger.

I bind unto myself the name,
the strong name of the Trinity,
by invocation of the same,
the Three in One, and One in Three,
of whom all nature hath creation,
eternal Father, Spirit, Word;
praise to the God of my salvation,
salvation is of Christ the Lord!

Friday Night Chats: Psalms with English Poet Malcolm Guite

[yotuwp type=”videos” id=”VArkoilamlc” ]

We invite you to join us for our next Friday Night Chats with English poet Malcolm Guite as he shares his new book David’s Crown: Sounding the Psalm. Malcolm will discuss with Pastor Jim and our Curate Kim how, “The Psalms express every human emotion with disarming honesty, as anger and thankfulness alike are directed at God. All of life is here with its moments of beauty and its times of despair and shame.”

Throughout his career, Malcolm has published poetry, theology and literary criticisms. He also currently teaches as part of the Faculty of Divinity at the University of Cambridge as well as lectures widely throughout England and North America on Theology and Literature.

We hope you will gather with us on TVC Online on Friday, March 19 at 6:30pm for this timely event.

Getting Started

Are you new to The Village Chapel? We know it can be a little overwhelming if you don’t know the routine, especially when it comes to kids’ programs. Fortunately, as soon as you enter the building, newcomers can stop at the Kids’ Welcome Table where you will be greeted warmly and directed to the appropriate rooms for your children’s ages.

We’re so happy to have your children join us and look forward to getting to know them – and you!

Kindergarten-5th Grade

We want TVC to be our kids’ favorite place, that’s why we have created a unique curriculum just for them in our TVC Kids department. What a privilege it is to partner with families each week, encouraging young worshippers! Our interactive service helps kids learn His word, experience passionate worship and begin to understand that loving and serving others is not only important, but fun too.

We are a creative bunch, so we use music, art, dance, drama, games and great books to communicate bible stories and principles. We use a “live it & learn it” approach, helping children see how each concept applies to their personal lives and helping them learn in a way that has lasting power. Most of all, TVC Kids know they are loved by their church family and by God, who will always be there for them. For more info, contact Children’s Ministry Director Jamie Kearney HERE or better yet, ask a TVC Kid. They will tell you all about it!

Call To Worship

The Heavens Declare the Glory of God

The heavens declare the glory of God,
And the sky above proclaims his handiwork.
Day to day pours out speech,
And night to night reveals knowledge.
There is no speech, nor are there words,
Whose voice is not heard.
Their voice goes out through all the earth,
And their words to the end of the world.
The law of the Lord is perfect,
The testimony of the Lord is sure.
The precepts of the Lord are right,
The commandment of the Lord is pure.
The rules of the Lord are true,
And righteous altogether.
Declare me innocent from hidden faults.
Keep back your servant also from presumptuous sins;
Let them not have dominion over me!
Let the words of my mouth
And the meditation of my heart
Be acceptable in your sight,
O Lord, my rock and my redeemer!

Advent 2020 Week 3: Hope
Let us praise our Lord Jesus Christ.

Alleluia! Jesus is coming!

He humbled himself to dwell among us, born a helpless baby.

Alleluia! Jesus is coming!

He is the Light of the World, the Bread of Heaven,

the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. Alleluia! Jesus is coming!

He died, rose from the dead, and lives in heaven.

He will come again because he loves us.

Alleluia! Jesus is coming!

Almighty God, we thank you for the light of HOPE you bring us in Jesus Christ.

As we worship You, flood our souls with Your presence.

Wash over our hearts with cleansing and renewal.

Chase away the darkness we so often nurture.

This Advent season, cause us to reflect the light of HOPE in Christ so others may be drawn to You.

We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ our King. Amen.

2020 Advent Week 2: Joy
The shepherds were the first to hear
the announcement of Christ’s birth—
the good news of great joy for all people.
Upon seeing the baby Jesus,
the shepherds spread the word concerning
what had been told them about this child.
All who heard it were amazed.
We have also heard this wonderful news:
the Word made flesh came to dwell among
us.
Though we have not seen Jesus, we love him;
even though we do not see him now
we look forward to His coming again.
Loving God, we thank you for the joy you
bring us in Christ Jesus.
By your Spirit come to us anew.
May we receive you with joy, as the
shepherds;
with gratitude, as Simeon;
with obedience, as Mary;
with love, as you have loved us.
We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ our
Lord. Amen!

Call To Worship

Advent 2020 Week 1:

In the beginning was the Word,
and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

He was in the beginning with God.
All things came into being through him.

In him was life, and the life was the light of all people.

The light shines in the darkness,
and the darkness has not overcome it.

And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory,
glory as of the only Son from the Father,
full of grace and truth.

Almighty God, we thank you for your gift of love – shown to us perfectly in Jesus Christ our King.

Holy Spirit, ready us now to hear your Word and to respond as faithful servants. We ask these things in the name of the One who was born in a stable in Bethlehem. Amen!
