The Power of Words: James 3:1-12

Welcome to Timeless Truth with Pastor Jim Thomas. In this episode, we continue our study in the book of James with James 3:1-12.

“The tongue is not just a thermometer that reflects the condition of the heart; it is also a thermostat—it sets the tone for our relationships, our homes, our churches.”
Alec Motyer

James gives us three illustrations of how powerful words can be:
  1. A bit in a horse’s mouth—small, but it guides the whole horse!
  2. The rudder on a ship—again, tiny, but it controls the direction of a massive vessel.
  3. A spark in a forest—yet again, a tiny spark, but it can set the whole world on fire.

“The tongue is the hinge on which the doors of our lives swing open to either grace or destruction.”
Sinclair Ferguson

“James is not exaggerating to make a point—he is describing the devastating reality of a tongue untamed by grace.”
R. Kent Hughes
