Today’s Episode: Rejoice Always
Scripture:Philippians 4:1-9Series: Philippians: The Unshakable Joy of Life in Christ
Are unshakable joy and lasting peace realistic possibilities in an anxious world? In this episode of Timeless Truth, Pastor Jim continues our series, Philippians: The Unshakable Joy of Life in Christ, exploring verses 4:1-9. We find practical biblical wisdom for standing firm, turning worry into prayer, and dwelling on the things of God.
Pastor Jim’s Show Notes:
This is not self-help from a prison cell.
This is resurrection life worked out under pressure.
Standing firm is not the way into grace; it is the fruit of grace. The Christian life is not sustained by grit but by union.
“The Christian life is not a matter of adding Christ to our lives, but of finding our lives in Christ.”
Sinclair B. Ferguson, The Whole Christ
Paul does not say, stand firm for the Lord, but in the Lord. Stability flows from belonging.
“Christian unity comes from what we hold in common, not from what we compromise.”
John R. W. Stott, The Message of Ephesians
Shared allegiance to the preeminent Christ reshapes how we handle disagreement.
“Joy is the personal decision to respond to life’s difficulties with faith. Joyful people spread joy wherever they go. Other people bring joy whenever they go. Which are you?”
Pastor Skip Heitzig
“Christian joy is a happiness that is not dependent on circumstances, but on the certainty that God is at work in them.”
Timothy Keller, Walking with God through Pain and Suffering
Unshakable joy floods our hearts—not when life is easy, but when Christ is enough.
“Human beings are in trouble most of the time. Those who don’t know they are in trouble are in the worst trouble. Prayer is the language of the people who are in trouble and know it, and who believe or hope that God can get them out.”
Eugene Peterson, Answering God
“I pray because I can’t help myself. I pray because I’m helpless.”
C. S. Lewis, Letters to Malcolm
Prayer is not a technique for calming the nerves; it is an act of trust in a sovereign Father.
“The peace Paul speaks of is not a feeling we generate, but a defense God provides.”
Michael Wilcock, The Message of Philippians
Many of you will know how my wife, Kim, has used the acronym THRPL to summarize v8. I’m going to expand it just a little and go with THRPLGEP (try saying that out loud a few times!)
Paul says, let your mind think on or dwell upon that which is:
True
Honorable
Right
Pure
Lovely
Good repute
Excellence
Praiseworthy
What we habitually think about and dwell on shapes our moods, desires, and fears. Dwelling on Paul’s list is taking advantage of a gift God designed our brains with, and that scientists have just recently named as neuroplasticity
“What occupies the mind will determine the direction of the life.”
R. Kent Hughes, Philippians: The Supremacy of Christ
“The Christian’s peace is not found in the absence of trouble, but in the presence of God.”
John R. W. Stott, The Bible Speaks Today: Philippians
The joy Paul speaks of is unshakable because it is found “in Christ”. The peace Paul speaks of passes our understanding and blows our minds because it is found “in Christ.” Because Christ lives within us and we live in Christ, the God of peace is with us—today, and forever.
