Rebellion

Rebellion with Pastor Tom Yarbrough
Recorded at The Village Chapel in Nashville, TN.

1. God’s creation was (and is) good.

“In the Bible, shalom means universal flourishing, wholeness, and delight — a rich state of affairs in which natural needs are satisfied and natural gifts fruitfully employed, a state of affairs that inspires joyful wonder as its Creator and Savior opens doors and welcomes the creatures in whom he delights. Shalom, in other words, is the way things ought to be.”
Cornelius Plantinga, Jr, Not the Way It’s Supposed to Be

2. Man was created with dignity and purpose.

“In the human realm men and women become co-workers with God; as creatures made in God’s image they too have a kind of  lordship over the earth, are God’s viceroys in creation.”
Albert M. Wolters, Creation Regained

3. Evil in Eden was invasive.

4. Human rebellion against God was willful.

“Sin is a culpable and personal affront to a personal God…God is for shalom and therefore against sin…In short, sin is culpable shalom-breaking.”
Cornelius Plantinga, Jr, Not the Way It’s Supposed to Be

5. We all have a sin problem that we cannot fix.

Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned…
Romans 5:12

And you were dead in the trespasses and sins in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience— among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the flesh and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind.
Ephesians 2:1-3

6. There is no corner of creation (earth) that is unaffected by Adam’s sin.

“Man’s sin so touches creation that God must address not only us but the world as well when he deals with sin. Sin and judgement, and thus also redemption, can never be limited to some alleged private or personal sector of life. Sin is a matter of the heart, but from the heart all of life is affected.”
Michael D. Williams, Far As the Curse is Found

“For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now.
Romans 8:20-22

7. God promised to crush evil, rescue mankind, and restore His good creation through a Wounded Victor – Jesus Christ!

For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive.
1 Corinthians 15:22

But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved— and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the coming ages He might show the immeasurable riches of His grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it
is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
Ephesians 2:4-10
