Hebrews 4:14-5:10

Because of the work of Jesus Christ as our Great High Priest we are invited to draw near to the throne of grace to receive mercy and grace for help in our time of need. This truth would have been great comfort for the wavering believers the author of Hebrews was addressing, and it is a great comfort to believers today. Join us as we continue our study in the book of Hebrews.

Sermon Notes

“Learn much of the Lord Jesus. For every look at yourself, take ten looks at Christ. He is altogether lovely.”
Robert Murray McCheyne, Memoir and Remains of the Rev. Robert Murray McCheyne

“Man in relation to God. The very core of human life; the key to man’s happiness; the secret of his existence; the clue to his identity; the heart of the human problem lies precisely here… Man in relation to God. There is nothing as important as this.”
Eric Alexander

Qualifications of a High Priest:

  1. He must be appointed by God.
  2. He must be appointed from among the people of God.

“Arise, my soul, arise,
shake off your guilty fears.
The bleeding Sacrifice
in my behalf appears.
Before the throne my Surety stands.
Before the throne my Surety stands.
My name is written on His hands.”
Charles Wesley, “Arise, My Soul, Arise”

1. Because Jesus is our Great High Priest we have comfort and confidence.

“Surely if he would not spare his own Son one stroke, one tear, one groan, one sigh, one circumstance of misery, it can never be imagined that ever he should, after this, deny or withhold from his people, for whose sakes all this was suffered, any mercies, any comforts, any privileges spiritual or temporal, which is good for them.”
John Flavel

Crown Him the Son of God, before the worlds began,
And ye who tread where He hath trod,

Crown Him the Son of Man;
Who every grief hath known that wrings the human breast,
And takes and bears them for His own, that all in Him may rest.

-Matthew Bridges,
“Crown Him With Many Crowns”

2. Because Jesus is our Great High Priest we can hold fast to our confession.

Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us.
Romans 8:34 (ESV)

“I ought to study Christ as an Intercessor… If I could hear Christ praying for me in the next room, I would not fear a million of enemies. Yet the distance makes not a difference. He is praying for me…”
Robert Murray McCheyne, Memoirs and Remains

3. Because Jesus is our Great High Priest we can draw near to the throne of grace.

“Because we have a great High Priest, the throne of God is a throne of grace… Grace to help! Not deserved help — gracious help. This is the whole point of the Old and New Testaments. God planned for a High Priest, a Savior, a Redeemer, a gracious Helper.”
John Piper, Desiring God

“Christ came into the world so that He might take hold of us and so that we, by gazing upon Christ, might be drawn and carried directly to the Father.”
Martin Luther, Luther’s Works, Vol. 26
