Hebrews 3:7-19

In our study of the book of Hebrews thus far we have been exhorted to pay closer attention to the revelation of God in Christ, to avoid the dangers of a drifting life, and not to neglect this great salvation offered to us in the person and work of Christ. For those who may find their faith wobbling as they struggle with the realities of a world that isn’t always friendly toward faith or, with their own brokenness and sin, the book of Hebrews offers encouragement and hope. Join Pastor Jim as he explores the subject of evading unbelief from chapter 3 of Hebrews.

Sermon Notes

“Those who choose to ‘come into his presence with thanksgiving’ must also come with attentiveness (‘hearken to his voice’) and obedience. They must not disregard God’s ways as their ancestors did.”
Raymond Brown

How to evade unbelief:

1. Fix your thoughts on the incomparable Christ

“Only when the one preeminent in reality becomes preeminent in our thoughts do we think straight.”
Mike Reeves

“Divine illumination and human thought belong together. All our thinking is unproductive without the Spirit of truth; yet his enlightenment is not intended to save us the trouble of using our minds. It is precisely as we ponder what God has done in Christ that the Spirit will open our eyes to grasp its implications.”
John Stott

2. Hold fast your confidence in the incomparable Christ

“Unbelief is the great stone lying at the door of your heart and preventing that door from being opened!”
C. H. Spurgeon

“The unbeliever has preferred to be by himself, without God, defying God, having God against him, and he shall have his preference. Nobody stands under the wrath of God except those who have chosen to do so. The essence of God’s action in wrath is to give men what they choose, in all its implications: nothing more, nothing less.”
J. I. Packer, Knowing God

3. Daily encourage one another to enter into and find rest in the love of the incomparable Christ

Encourage one another to…

  1. Hear
  2. Believe
  3. Obey
  4. Rest
  5. Share

“God has appointed us a captain of our salvation, and made him responsible for seeing us through this world home to glory. Thank God we can count on his faithfulness and know that he will never fail, never once lose his patience or his temper with any of us, but will fulfill his appointed task to the very end. He will save to the uttermost all who come to God by him.”
David Gooding, An Unshakeable Kingdom
