Hebrews 2:5-18

After having presented convincing evidence for the divinity of Jesus Christ in chapter 1, here in chapter 2 the author of Hebrews shows us the significance of the humanity of Jesus Christ. What difference does it make to believe that Jesus Christ was fully God and fully human? What can Christ accomplish with both natures that cannot be accomplished in just one of the two? How does it affect our relationship with the Lord to know that Christ experienced all that He went through in becoming human, suffering and dying on a cross, and then being raised physically from the dead? Join Pastor Jim as he points out the significance of what this all means, in our study from Hebrews 2.

Sermon Notes

Jesus Christ is at the center of all that God has done in…

  • Revelation
  • Creation
  • Redemption

For it was fitting for Him, for whom are all things, and through whom are all things, in bringing many sons to glory, to perfect the author of their salvation through sufferings.

Greek: archegos

  • Author (NASB)
  • Captain (KJV/NKJV)
  • Pioneer (NIV/NET)
  • Founder (ESV)
  • Leader (NLT)
  • Source (CSB)

“One basic idea clings to the word in all its uses. An archegos is some one who begins something in order that others may enter into it. He begins a family that some day others may be born into the family; he founds a city in order that others may some day dwell in the city; he found a philosophic school that others may follow him into the truth and the peace that he himself has discovered; he is the author of blessings, or of penalties, into which others will also enter. An archegos is one who blazes the trail for others to follow.”
William Barclay

1. Jesus is the pioneer of a new humanity

“Whatever else is or is not true, this one thing is certain – man is not what he was meant to be.”
G. K. Chesterton

“The identity of those known by God as his children carries with it a distinctive lifestyle. Indeed, a frequent strategy for moral transformation in the Bible is the call to live in accordance with our new identity in Christ. The defining moment of our lives took place two thousand years ago when we died and rose to new life in union with Christ.”
Brian S. Rosner, Known by God

2. Jesus is the pioneer of a new mission

“To live in the kingdom way is to live a real and everlasting life, beginning the very moment you follow Jesus. This means that everything is overhauled or restructured to fit the kingdom way, the new way to be human. Knowledge, education, romance, marriage, sex, parenting, work, play, money, ambition, business, social services, caring for the earth, even being the church in the world—all of these areas and a thousand more now come under kingdom rule and authority. Following Jesus faithfully means seeing to it that all of these areas in our lives are subverted by the kingdom and rebuilt in the new way.”
Charlie Peacock, New Way to Be Human

3. Jesus is the pioneer of a new destiny

“Jesus gives us a DESTINY to live for, a DIGNITY to live with, and a DESIGN to live by.”
E. Stanley Jones
