Hebrews 11:17-40

We continue our study of Hebrews 11 with its focus on the subject of faith; not just faith “in faith itself” and not just a spiritual warm-fuzzy kind of faith, but a properly directed faith, whose object is the living, loving and sinner saving, Almighty God of the Bible. Hebrews is about God coming on a rescue mission to earth in the person of The Incomparable Christ. Hebrews 11 is an encouragement to the faith of Christian believers, who are now or, who have suffered, and who need encouragement to know that they can still trust Christ, because it is He who will hold them fast when they waver, even through the dark storms of persecution, suffering, and deep loss. Join Pastor Jim for this encouraging study from Hebrews 11:17-40.

Sermon Notes

“Oh divine faith, wonderful foundation of life, strong support of hope, anchor of devotion, and shining chord extended from heaven, seizing which we climb to him who is above and beyond all altitude!”
Lefèvre d’Etaples

The Christian Gospel leads us into a trusting relationship with God that…

1. Is rooted in the unwavering promises of God

“The greatest challenge of the book of Hebrew is to cultivate such a deep and satisfying relationship with God that we rest in him whether living or dying, whether comfortable or miserable. The great challenge of the book of Hebrews is to cultivate the unshakable confidence that God himself is better than anything that life can give us or that death can take away from us.”
John Piper, Desiring God

2. Is a needed antidote to our cultural declension

“Faith is living like you really do believe that in every situation, location and relationship of life God is profoundly smarter than you.”
Paul Tripp

3. Offers us the motivation and power to love both God and our neighbors

“Next to the ministry of the Word, the most fruitful pastoral duty is to help all sorts of odd sheep to live together, and show them how to live in the world amongst goats without becoming goats.”
William Still, The Work of the Pastor

“Christians follow someone who sacrificed everything to redeem and renew the world. At the heart of the Christian faith is a man who died a victim of injustice and who called for the forgiveness of his enemies.”
Tim Keller, The Reason for God
