Colossians 2

In chapter 2 of Colossians, Paul both encourages and exhorts the ancient church at Colossae. He reminds them the Christian faith is both personal and propositional; that everything they need is found in Christ. Join Pastor Jim as he points out the timeless truths of the gospel that propel us forward along a pathway to maturity in Christ.

Sermon Notes

“Everything we might want to ask about God and his purposes can and must now be answered with reference to the crucified and risen Jesus, the Messiah. Paul’s repeated descriptions of such understanding as ‘riches’ or ‘treasures’ invite his readers to explore it with eagerness.”
N.T. Wright, Colossians and Philemon

Marks of a Maturing Church (v. 1-7)

In Christ…

  • We have been knit together in love (v. 2)

  • We have true knowledge of God’s mystery (v. 2)
  • We find all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge (v. 3)
  • We walk in a living grace (v. 5-6)
  • We have been firmly rooted, built up, established (v. 7)
  • We overflow with gratitude (v. 7)
  • We know the one true God (v. 9)
  • We are made complete (v. 10)
  • We know the authority over all other rulers and authorities (v. 10)
  • We have died, been baptized and brought back to life (v. 11-13)
  • We have settled our account with God (v. 14)

“I long to be filled with divine knowledge, divine wisdom, divine love, divine holiness, to the utmost extent of my capacity. I want to feel that all the currents of my soul are interfused in one channel deep and wide, and all flowing towards the heart of Christ.”
Griffith John

“Just as a great tree is deep-rooted in the soil and draws its nourishment from it, so the Christian is rooted in Christ, the source of his life and strength. Just as the house stands fast because it is built on strong foundations, so the Christian life is resistant to any storm because it is founded on the strength of Christ. Christ is alike the source of the Christian’s life and the foundation of his stability.”
William Barclay

“All power structures, ancient or modern, whether political, economic or racial, have the potential to become rivals to Christ, beckoning his followers to submit themselves to them in order to find a fuller security. The invitation is as blasphemous as it is unnecessary. Christ brooks no rivals. His people need no-one but him.”
N.T. Wright, Colossians and Philemon
