Acts 19:21-41

Every Idol Has a Gospel

When the gospel took root in Ephesus, many turned from their old way of life to follow Jesus, and the word of the Lord continued to increase and prevail mightily. But a great work of God rarely goes unopposed. In Acts 19:21-41, a silversmith named Demetrius stirs up the city to defend the goddess Artemis, and for two hours a crowd shouts her praises, though most of them don’t even know why they’ve gathered.

Demetrius complained that Paul was teaching that gods made with hands are not gods at all. He was more right than he knew. Every idol has a gospel. It promises freedom, peace, and security, and it quietly insists that Jesus is not enough. Join Pastor Tommy as we discover that heart idols aren’t torn down by willpower alone, but they are dethroned when our hearts are captured by a greater affection.

Acts 19:21-41

Every Idol Has a Gospel

Pastor Tommy Bailey

For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.
Ephesians 6:12

Every idol promises freedom, peace, and security.
Every idol has a gospel.

1. What is an idol?

“A person will worship something, have no doubt about that. We may think our tribute is paid in secret in the dark recesses of our hearts, but it will out. That which dominates our imaginations and our thoughts will determine our lives, and our character. Therefore, it behooves us to be careful what we worship, for what we are worshipping we are becoming.”
Ralph Waldo Emerson

“What do I long for so much that my heart clamors, “Give me this, or else I’ll die!” What must I have for life to be meaningful or happy? What enables me to lie down at night and know that, at my core, I’m really okay? If I answer that question with anything other than God Himself, then that’s what functions as a god for me.”
Elyse Fitzpatrick, Idols of the Heart

2. How is an idol weak?

They have mouths, but do not speak;
eyes, but do not see.
They have ears, but do not hear…
Those who make them become like them;
so do all who trust in them.
Psalm 115:1,8

3. How is an idol powerful?

“Idols: ‘Your body must be broken for me.’
Jesus: ‘This is my body, broken for you.'”
Matt Smethurst

The Screen is my shepherd;
There is so much I want.
It makes me lie awake past midnight,
it leads me beside endless reels and video shorts;
it fills my soul with anxiety;
it guides me to more clicks for its metrics’ sake.
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of doomscrolling,
I will fear no boredom, for the algorithm is with me.
Notifications and noise, they distract me.
You prepare the “Next Episode” in the presence of my responsibilities;
You spike my brain with dopamine;
my Screen Time runs over.
Surely my metadata will follow me all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the Cloud forever.
Glenn Packiam, Psalm 23 Remix

4. What can dethrone an idol?

“Like wax, the heart takes the shape of that which warms it.”
Michael Reeves

Discussion Questions

  • Do you feel that you have idols in your life that are too prominent? Have these idols let you down? Do you agree with the Ralph Waldo Emerson quote, “A person will worship something, have no doubt about that. We may think our tribute is paid in secret in the dark recesses of our hearts, but it will out. That which dominates our imaginations and our thoughts will determine our lives, and our character. Therefore, it behooves us to be careful what we worship, for what we are worshipping we are becoming.” ?
  • How does Jesus provide freedom, peace, and security from the idol of approval, or any other idols that are prominent in your life?
  • It was said that idolatry is wanting too little, because only God can truly satisfy our deepest longings. How does God provide more?
  • Do we have godly men and women who can speak into our lives, as Paul had in Ephesus? Are we that kind of person to our own family and friends? How can we dethrone our idols together?

Call To Worship

To God Be the Glory

Leader: To our God and Father be glory forever and ever!
People: My soul magnifies the Lord, And my spirit rejoices in God my Savior.
Leader: To the King of the ages, immortal, invisible, The only God, Be honor and glory forever and ever.
People: I will praise the Lord as long as I live; I will sing praises to my God while I have my being.
All: To our God and Father be glory forever and ever! Amen!

Confession of Faith

New City Catechism
Part 2, Christ, Redemption, Grace;  Q. 34, 35

Leader: Since we are redeemed by grace alone, through Christ alone, must we still do good works and obey God’s Word?
People: Yes, because Christ, having redeemed us by His blood, also renews us by His Spirit, so that our lives may show love and gratitude to God; so that we may be assured of our faith by the fruits; and so that by our godly behavior others may be won to Christ.
Leader: Since we are redeemed by grace alone, through faith alone, where does this faith come from?
People: All the gifts we receive from Christ we receive through the Holy Spirit, including faith itself.

Classic Prayer

A.W. Tozer

Now Father, wilt Thou grant, we pray, that we may forget the things that are behind and press forward toward the things that are ahead? And that we may see all that is as being only the size of a hazelnut, and see that God is vast, so vast, that we encompass the world and are utterly empty without Thee! Fill us, O God, fill us with Thyself, for without Thee, we will ever be wanting. Fill us with Thyself, for Jesus’ sake. Amen.
