The Sermon on the Mount, Part 12

Welcome to Timeless Truth with Pastor Jim Thomas. This season, Pastor Jim is leading us in a study of The Sermon on the Mount.

The Sermon on the Mount is found in Matthew, chapters 5-7.

Our good deeds are often public, but our religious devotion should be private. This is how both can result to the glory of God.

“Now this I say, he who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must do just as he has purposed in his heart, not grudgingly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.”
2 Corinthians 9:6-7

Givers gotta give!

Christian giving should be…

  1. Generous: sow bountifully
  2. Disciplined: purpose in your heart
  3. Cheerful: delighting as we imitate the generosity of our Father

Tithes and Offerings: Some interpret and apply these terms…

  • Tithes – supporting our home church
  • Offerings – spontaneous needs we encounter
  • Christian giving = Whimsical generosity with a worshipful motivation.

“In spite of what some ‘success preachers’ say, God’s goal for our lives is not money but maturity, not happiness but holiness, not getting but giving.”
Warren Wiersbe, On Being a Servant of God

“The measure of all love is its giving. The measure of the love of God is the cross of Christ, where the Father gave the Son to die so that the spiritually dead might have life.”
J. I. Packer, Rediscovering Holiness
